Theories are abstract, and may be constructed independently of any semantic components, as seen in mathematics, or the syntactic elements may be entirely subordinate the semantic thrust, as is found in post-modernist, post-structuralist, and similar philosophical forms. Theories may be expressed mathematically, symbolically, or in common language, but are generally expected to follow principles of rational thought or logic.
